Prompts That Actually Work: 10 Patterns
A prompt is not a magic spell — it is instructions. Vague instructions get vague answers, from AI or from people. These ten patterns are the difference, each with an example you can copy today.
1. Give it a job
Start by saying who the AI should act as. “Act as a patient teacher explaining this to a complete beginner.” The answers get clearer immediately, because the AI now knows the standard to aim at.
2. Add your context
One or two sentences about your situation changes everything. “I run a small bakery in Saskatoon. My slow day is Tuesday.” Advice with context beats generic advice every time.
3. Show an example
Want a certain style? Paste a sample of it. “Here is a caption I liked. Write three more in this style, about my new product.” One example teaches more than ten adjectives.
4. Ask for steps, not a blob
“Give me a step-by-step plan, one step per line, starting with what I can do today.” Plans you can follow beat essays you admire.
5. Set the format
Say what shape the answer takes: “Answer as a short table,” “as a checklist,” “in exactly five bullet points.” Format is a request, not a hope.
6. Set the length
“In under 100 words,” or “one short paragraph.” Short answers are not rudeness — they are respect for your time. Ask for longer only when you need depth.
7. Ask for options
“Give me three different approaches, with the pros and cons of each.” Deciding between options is easier than judging one answer in a vacuum — and it shows you how the AI is thinking.
8. Ask what is missing
“What questions should I be asking that I haven't?” and “What could go wrong with this plan?” are two of the most valuable sentences in all of AI. Use them on anything important.
9. Talk back
The first answer is a draft. “Shorter.” “Simpler words.” “Warmer.” “Give me a stronger opening line.” Two or three rounds of feedback is normal — it is how the good version appears.
10. Ask it to check itself
“Read your answer again and point out anything that might be wrong or uncertain.” It will not catch everything — you still verify anything that matters — but it catches more than you would expect.
Save your winners
When a prompt works beautifully, save the exact words in a notes file. Within a month you will own a small personal library of prompts that work for your life — that library is worth more than any course. (It is also, honestly, the seed our AI Prompt Pack grew from — ready-made winners if you would rather start from ours.)
Practise right now. The chat on this page is free for a few messages a day. Try pattern 2 and pattern 9 on a real question and feel the difference.
